Rant: The Dishonourable Peter MacKay

It was revealed Friday evening that the current Minister of National Defence, Peter McKay, after his many vehement denials, has been shown to be the recipient of a number of emails from Richard Colvin (the whistleblower on the Afghan detainee transfer situation). Only then did McKay, the Foreign Minister at the time of the emails, finally admitted to having received a couple of the emails, which would indicate that MacKay has either been lying to cover up the situation and interfering with the truth or is simply incompetent.

This is not the first time that Mr. McKay acts dishonourably, in fact, I'll offer up an example that dates to the creation of the current Conservative Party of Canada back in 2003.

If anybody still remembers the situation back in 2003, they will remember that there were two right wing parties in Canada: the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives of Canada. Both parties had mediocre standings in the polls due to dividing the right. 2003 was also the year wherein the Progressive Conservatives held their last vote for a leader.

Peter McKay was one of the candidates in the elections for PC leader, running mostly on his charming image rather than any actual policy. After a number of rounds, one of his opponents, David Orchard, decided to leave the leadership race and "hand over" his supporters to McKay in exchange for various conditions including not supporting a merger between the Alliance and the PC parties. Orchard called the agreement a "gentleman's agreement", little did he know, McKay is no gentleman.

Almost as soon as McKay was made leader of the PCs did he agree with Stephen Harper, the then leader of the Canadian Alliance, to merge the two parties, breaking his promise to David Orchard, which prompted many PCs to leave the newly created and much more right wing party that had been created.

McKay has been dishonest and dishonourable since his inauguration as party leader of the PCs. His conduct in parliament and in the media has been unseemly such as having essentially called his ex-girlfriend, fellow MP, Belinda Stronach, a dog to another MP. He manages to win elections in his Nova Scotia riding nearly solely based on the fact that residents think of him as a "home town boy" while having exhibited incompetence in his roles ever since his appointment to cabinet.

Politicians like Peter MacKay make me doubt Canada's education and electoral systems. Perhaps one day, karma will catch up to him.
