Update: GobliNews Maintenance

Yeah... so no new posts of value yesterday or today. There's a reason for this and it's not that I'm lazy! Apparently after these months of inactivity a few bugs have cropped up in my code due to updates to the SQL server and some mistakes of my own.

When I created the site, I didn't expect more than 100 members so I had created the database as such (it's now ready for a lot more). Unfortunately, I also wasn't expecting bots to find my site. Apparently even websites as limited as mine can be bombarded by bots from around the world (particularly Russia it seems)!

Co. let me know that there was an issue with the password reset function and so I ended up checking through the code, once I realised it was fine I checked my database and found that there were about ~120 bots that had registered on the site during its long slumber. I made sure to update the code to check for humans this time!

Since I developed the scripts for this website, I've worked on the PHP for two other websites including Annicus' photography website and I realised that GobliNews is severely lacking in administration options. I've been making the changes and hopefully it'll reduce the number of spelling and grammar mistakes I make since I won't have to be writing HTML for images and structure while I'm writing the articles.

Furthermore, I've decided that having articles showing up on the homepage is not the greatest idea. I'm going to change the homepage so that it displays the summaries for articles, links to new one(s)that are posted and possibly links to interesting pages I find. The RSS feed will therefore display either a shortened version or the entire update depending on how long I decide to make these things. I figure that this will allow me to post multiple articles and/or a day and have multiple updates display on the homepage as well.

I might also make some further aesthetic changes to the site, but those will come after the more pressing updates I have in mind.

Stay tuned for some new articles including the follow-up to my email to different politicians concerning the CRTC ruling. I have direct responses from the parties and also a (now over a week old) article from the CBC with the Liberal position on the ruling.

GobliNews isn't dead again, it's being reborn and re-vamped!
